Frontier Hotel 1942-2007

"This is the end result of all the bright lights... and the comp trips, of all the champagne... and free hotel suites,
and all the broads and all the booze. It's all been arranged just for us to get your money.
That's the truth about Las Vegas. We're the only winners. The players don't stand a chance. "

The Frontier Hotel Sign

Located on Industrial Road, just a short walk from Fashion Show Mall and the Trump Tower, this photo is of the only remaining structure left from Frontier Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. How this sign was allowed to remain standing after the entire hotel was imploded seems rather strange. Now it is just another piece of urban blight that so permeates much of Las Vegas today.

This photo is for me a perfect reminder of what Las Vegas once was and what Las Vegas has become.  The Frontier in a way symbolized "old Vegas."  One of the first hotels on the Las Vegas strip, mafia control/influence, a mid range hotel that rewarded even the low end gambler, smoke filled, dark, nice in some ways but with a seedy side to it.  Not much of the Frontier exists anymore in Las Vegas.  Sure there are places like the Riviera, Sahara, and even Circus Circus that are much like the Frontier, but those places will meet their end in due course...

People of the Las Vegas Strip...

The Las Vegas Strip has a collection of people probably unlike anywhere in the world. Aside from the thousands of tourists walking around there is collection of people that inhabit the Strip on a daily basis. The following photos show the mix of people that I have come across...

Up and down the Strip you will find a variety of people dressed in all sorts of costumes or doing some sort of entertainment. They cannot charge for their "services" but if you want a photo taken with one of them, you are expected to toke (tip).

This young lady is quite interesting. I am not sure what her "costume" is supposed to be -- Black Angel, maybe? Anyway, she tends to hang around MGM and seems to get quite a bit of attention, especially from drunk guys. If you know who she is, tell her to check out my blog. I would like to do a Q & A with her.

This next pic is of a guy on the pedestrian bridge over Flamingo Rd. I thought his sign was quite amusing. There are guys like him all over the place holding signs begging for money.

There are homeless people all over the Las Vegas Strip. They tend not to be as hostile and aggressive as in other large cities, but they will hit you up for money given the opportunity. This guy was sitting near MGM and just did not seem all too happy. Had that look on his face that he lost his last $20.

Blackjack Hall of Shame

The Blackjack Hall of Shame is devoted to those individuals and casinos who changed the game of blackjack by making the payout on a blackjack (Ace with a 10/face card) from 3/2 to 6/5. This change in payout which translates in a win to the player from 1.5x of their bet to 1.2x of their bet. This subtle but sinister change has made blackjack unplayable. If you factor in player errors in 6/5 blackjack you are far better to just sit like a pigeon at the double zero roulette table and blindly bet your money. If you play 6/5 blackjack, you are a sucker, ploppy, and dumb motherfucker. You get what you deserve...

The following individuals are the first two inductees to the Blackjack Hall of Shame. They are both CEO's of two of the largest gaming companies in the world and think it is perfectly acceptable to rip off customers in their casinos with 6/5 blackjack.

Gary Loveman
CEO, Harrah's

James Murren,
CEO, MGM Resorts International

New inductee to the Blackjack Hall of Shame:

Michael Gaughan, Owner
South Point Hotel and Casino
Please see my blog post about why Mr. Gaughan has been included in this special group:
