Frontier Hotel 1942-2007

"This is the end result of all the bright lights... and the comp trips, of all the champagne... and free hotel suites,
and all the broads and all the booze. It's all been arranged just for us to get your money.
That's the truth about Las Vegas. We're the only winners. The players don't stand a chance. "

Las Vegas Car of the Week #8

Oldsmobile Cutlass -- I think 1972.  I used to own a few of these back in the day, including 442's.  Nice power (especially with a 455) and a smooth ride -- plus they usually had power everything.  Now, I still cannot decide whether I like the look of this ride. Maybe the rims and tires just don't work for me.  This car looks familiar -- maybe it was used in a recent music video?  It was parked in front of the Mandalay Bay during the recent Barrett-Jackson auction.

Las Vegas Smoker of the Week #7

Another car smoker, late afternoon, rolling down Boulder Highway near Sam's Town...

Across the street from the Mandalay Bay...

Las Vegas is a city of constrasts.  Sometimes just a street divides the haves and the have nots... the high end and the low end, the rich and the poor...

Mandalay Bay and its other properties (The Hotel, Four Seasons) are at the south end of the LV Strip.  The Mandalay Bay is a beautiful property -- one of the more upscale properties on the LV Strip.

What's interesting is the area around Mandalay Bay has never been developed to the extent that other parts of the Strip have.  It's quite the contrast to be in the luxury of Mandalay Bay and then simply cross the street and see the other "side" of LV!  Enjoy the photos...

Not sure what the daily rate is at the Motel 8...

It would be interesting to see a "pool party" at this place!

The van with the flat tire looks like something out of a Cheech and Chong movie...

Next door to the Motel 8 is the lovely Desert Oasis...

For a Saturday and over 100f it sure is slow at the Desert Oasis pool.  Maybe they need to have some music and drink service?

The "Laughing Jacklope" is now closed.  Shuttered and boarded up.  Covered in tagging...

I don't know the name of this place (Diamond something, I think).   The joint has a large pink elephant in the front of it.

How to save a buck or two...

You just drove 4+ hours from LA.   It was a long week at work, lots of stress.  Now its time to let loose!  It's Vegas baby!    Time to get a test tube drink and hit a tit pit!

Check out this smart tourist.  He's saving at least $1.00 by schelping his own gear into the Sweat Point.  So what if it's 103f at 4:30pm?  So what if you have to walk 150 yards from the parking lot to the front entrance of the hotel?  Four bags, no problem.  I can do this all by myself -- I am young and I am strong.

Las Vegas Abandoned Construction Site #5

Here we go again.  This is the "Copper Pointe Business Park" about a mile or so south of "Manhattan West."  It appears to be an office building complex.  I have no idea what the term "office/medical condo" means...

What is interesting about this development is that it is on a one-way street adjacent to the 215 north.  Why would a commercial development such as this be built on a one-way street makes no sense to me.  If you drive past it you have to drive at least a mile to get back over to it.

Anyway, it's just slowly deteriorating until someone decides to come in and finish the complex.  Maybe the place just needs to be demolished?

Las Vegas Smoker of the Week #6

Las Vegas Strip, late afternoon.  A nice young woman decides to enjoy a freshly lit cigarette...

Las Vegas Abandoned Construction Site #4

The latest addition to this sad spectacle across Las Vegas is "Manhattan West" -- 215 and Russell Road on the way to Summerlin.   The project appears to stacked condos and may have been very close to completion.  Now it just sits there abandoned.  Perhaps one day it will get finished...

These failed "condo" projects are everywhere across the city.  Some are finished but completely empty, others are like this -- abandoned.

Las Vegas Car of the Week #7

Another Caddy (sorry).  These leather/vinyl tops are very popular with these rides I see around Henderson.  I like how the gold pin striping seems to match the tires!  Very sharp.  Tinted windows would probably be a nice upgrade.  Gotta love the "cell phone antenna" on the back window.  Now that's old school.  Note:  Vehicle is in a handicapped spot   My guess is the driver is female, 75+, Black Card status at GVR.

Interesting Bill Board...

Thank you MGM for this titillating bill board.  Sin City at it's best!    It's currently open for viewing on Tropicana heading west from the airport.  Of course, if you get long hauled you don't get to see it!  Sorry...

It does make me laugh though.  I remember when the MGM Grand was opened as a "family friendly" resort with an amusement park aimed at families.  Come on now...

Enjoy the photo... (click on it if you want a larger size!)

Las Vegas Abandoned Construction Site #3

This construction site is adjacent to Red Rock Resort and Casino in Summerlin.  From the photos below you can see that all you have here is steel and that's it.  To finish this place will take a great deal of work.  I have no idea if this project is a hotel/casino or office building.  Like much of Las Vegas, these places just sit abandoned waiting to be finished as they slowly rust and deterioriate.

Imagine your some big player at Red Rock and your comped suite happens to over look this mess.  Nice.

If you know the story behind this project, please feel free to comment or email me.  Thanks.  JH.

Another Longhauler in Action...

Same old story...  Some unsuspecting tourist(s) getting longhauled to the Strip.  Interesting to see a Prius used as a cab -- seems like that would be a tight fit for some people in the back of one of those.  I was driving to Summerlin today to visit some friends when I caught this guy in action.  When I took these photos there were at least 5 cabs in front of and behind me coming from the airport and heading to 15 north.

"Lucky" cab #2800 merges onto to 215 west from airport tunnel.  Note he was not coming from Henderson.  He came from the airport!

Longhauler merges on to the 15 north connector.

Longhauler merges onto the 15 north.

Longhauler proceeds on 15 north.  At this point I have no idea where this cab is going.  Maybe this is not a longhaul.  Maybe he's heading to downtown...  Maybe I am wrong about this one?

Longhauler blows past Frank Sinatra and Tropicana exit.  Maybe this is a downtown trip....

He's staying in the far right lane the entire time.  I suspect now this is not a downtown trip.  Next exit is Flamingo.  Bet that's where this longhauler is heading...

Bingo.  Longhauler and his unsuspecting mark(s) exit at Flamingo.  No problem, this cabbie just basically drove almost double the distance instead of taking side streets over to Flamingo. As I drove past him I noticed that he did turn right on Flamingo, heading toward the Strip.  This was probably a Bally's or Flamingo drop off.  Nice.

Las Vegas Smoker of the Week #5

Late afternoon, Las Vegas Strip, 103f.  Time for a delicious cigarette in between selling bottles of water for a buck.
